Gratitude

Through this season of Thanksgiving and Christmas I want to express more gratitude to the Lord. Sometimes it can be difficult depending on circumstances, or even just having a forgetful mind can make it hard. In the difficult times, remembering to praise and be thankful to God helps nourish our relationship with the Lord. I am reminded of the song Gratitude by Brandon Lake that shows even when we have nothing else to give to the Lord, we can give Him our praise.

“So I throw up my hands
And praise you again and again
Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah.
And I know it’s not much
But I’ve nothing else fit for a king
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah.”

I encourage you to listen to this song if you feel that you are struggling to praise and be thankful toward God during this season of your life. I know I can relate to that in my own life right now. Opportunities to serve God come up even when you don’t feel ready; and that can make it challenging to be thankful, especially when you’re afraid or nervous. In those times where you feel God’s calling, pray and praise. Be thankful that you are able to serve our God who will be with you through every step of the way. I know it is easier said than done to be thankful, but ultimately praying your way through the fear, anger, or confusion will lead you to have a more grateful heart and to feel closer to the Lord.

“Oh come on, my soul
Oh, don’t you get shy on me
Lift up your song
Cause you’ve got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord”

This part of the song reminds us Jesus followers to embrace the Lord, to praise with the strength that He has given us inside. The strength of a lion is in each Jesus follower, and for that we must be thankful. He can get us through anything.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17

Everything we say or do we should do because of the love we have for our Lord, and we should thank Him for the experiences we go through and the opportunities that arise even when these are challenging and sometimes painful. To practice expressing gratitude, I challenge you to pray to God and praise Him every time an event or opportunity arises (that the Lord is calling you to) and to act on it, so the Lord can stretch and grow your faith. God uses every single one of us, we just have to have a heart grateful enough for those opportunities and a mind open enough to let Him work in us.
