“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Wow, easier said than done, right? It’s hard to be “strong” and “courageous” when we are in the middle of one of life’s turbulent storms. We often feel overwhelmed and as though we are drowning in our struggle. This Scripture encourages us to walk bravely into the storm, using the awesome power of the sovereign God to propel us forward step by step.

The Lord spoke these words to Joshua after Moses had died, and he became the leader of the Israelite nation. Take just a minute and imagine being Joshua. The Lord your God is commanding you to be strong and of good courage. No Holy pressure there, right?

If you read prior to verse 9, the Lord God tells Joshua “Only be strong and of good courage” (v.7). I love the use of the word only in this scripture, as if God was telling him there is no room for anything else but strength and courage. And then in verse 9, He states it again - be strong and of good courage, adding not to be afraid or dismayed.

Why do you think He started out that verse by saying “have I not commanded you?” Isn’t that an interesting way to begin to encourage someone? At first, I thought it sounded a little harsh to use the word commanded, but after thinking about it, I see how it makes perfect sense. The Lord is aware of His own strength and might; it’s us that often think of Him in our own limited strength. He is aware of His capabilities as a sovereign and awesome God, whereas we limit Him to our own experiences. God is reminding Joshua of His Holiness and His supreme lordship by commanding him, not asking, him into obedience. Once the Lord has Joshua’s attention, He then reminds him not to be afraid or dismayed. Why? Because the Lord God is with him wherever he goes.

I love Scripture, and I love it because it is so definitive. It is set in stone, never changes, never waivers, never stops breathing life into us. Again, imagine being Joshua, and the Lord God has told you that He, Creator of the universe, is with you wherever you go. Now, that should inspire and encourage someone today! The Lord is telling Joshua that there really wasn’t a reason to be afraid or to dismay because He is there with Joshua every step of the way!

Really take this Scripture into your heart, and allow it to challenge your current understanding of God. Isn’t He good to speak to us? Isn’t He good to encourages us, strengthen us, and empower us in truth? He has left us a wonderful book of encouragement and instruction to lead us where we should be - with Him. Doesn’t it lift your heart up know that He is with us wherever we may go on this earth, whatever trial we face, whatever hardship we endure? He is there all the way.

These words were spoken to Joshua many years ago, but remember that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). So yes, this word does apply to you today! Whatever storm you are facing today, be strong, be of good courage, and be not afraid or dismayed! The

Lord God is with you wherever you go!
